Thrown and turned tea pot
1987
This teapot shares with the others of this series the balance of classical and folk sensibilities.
The colour is made from sponged manganese and lightly cobalt- stained manganese to give a slightly lilac shade of cool, near- neutral, blue.
The random texture in the colour suggests one of polished stone although it is clear that the effect is applied.
Historically, this kind of glaze reflects the aspiration of 18c pottery to reproduce the effect of semi-precious minerals due to its fascination with the natural world and the rise of science. Simple 18c pottery used these qualities, often quite naively, to generate wonder .
"The latter part of the 20th century's pre-occupation with 'art' gave me a terrific sense of enjoyment in 'whispering' a small, but delightful, subtlety".
