"I have since a child, been susceptible to the landscape around me, not what it contains so much as the mood that it emotes. When this is full of the larger drama of changing light or weather it can become so intense that Iam silenced by awe. I an aware of the irony in this and ignore it, it is too good a gift to let my sceptical turn of mind reject it, so it is this awe that I try to paint.
Ever since I saw a seascape by Turner in the National Gallery when I was fourteen I have known that there is a way of seeing landscape and using paint that serves. It is this that I look for in the painitng. I want paintings to be beautiful, the paint capturing a moment in the ever-changing perception of the place I am painting, as if the place only exists through the feeling it causes. "
Roger Michell (2006)
